BARBADOS CULTURE CENTRE
The Barbados Museum and Culture Centre is situated on the edge of the geographical headland at Woodbine Beach. The centre was placed in Toronto because of the large percentage of Caribbean people that live in this part of Canada and it was placed by Woodbine Beach to allow for a close vicintity to geography similar to that in Barbados.
The Barbados Museum and Culture Centre takes visitors through the different phases of Barbados; history from slavery and colonialism to independence. By looking at the development of architecture during these phases I gained inspiration for that informed my design. I looked at the development of the vernacular style, the chattel house and allowed its journey to help tell the story of Barbados’ history.
